2016 is the Year of Jon

Greetings and salutations, fellow beings of Earth! My name is Jon Roberts, the Ojibwe Outlaw, the King of the Knee Slappers and a few other nicknames I’ve been given that I can’t recall right now. I am a husband/father/comedian/bullshitter and looking forward to a bountiful 2016. As of right now, I only have 3 gigs guaranteed this year. I’ll be at Las Mojarras in Minneapolis, MN on January 21st, Timber Lake Lodge in Grand Rapids, MN on May 5th and then at Ho Chunk Casino – Black River Falls, WI on May 29th.

2015 was quite a year for me comedy-wise. I was able to travel quite a bit while a documentary was filmed about Native comedy starring myself and “The Rez Reporter” Rob Fairbanks. Not sure about a release date yet. But right now I’m trying to get some merchandise set up and possibly a comedy DVD.

Thanks for the support and book a bro!

Comedy & I are on a break.  It’s not you, it’s me.  I need to focus on this opportunity I’ve been given to go back to college to finish my bachelor’s to become a teacher or whatever.  Oh, I’ll still be hitting the stage occasionally.  Just not as much as I planned to.  You see, I was going to be on the road all summer.  That didn’t work out as planned though.  I don’t have the name recognition like my fellow comedians.  I’m a rare breed.  Even though I chose to try comedy almost 5 years ago, I have a hard time promoting myself.  It’s what we call “Indii-aanish” in Red Lake.  I think that means bashful.  Over these past 5 years, according to my wife, I “low ball” myself when I get asked for my price to perform.  I’m a terrible business/marketing man.  Though I’ve taken some classes on marketing & know how to do it, I just can’t.  But from now on, in order for me to take a break from my current mission, my rate has doubled.  What you paid me in the past has now doubled.  It’s still probably not what others in comedy charge, but I’m trying to put my foot down and own this comedy career I’ve tried to create.  I should also quit saying “Suck it, bitches!”

Saturday’s Rez Life Comedy Show was a classic! Working with Tonia Jo Hall & Rob Fairbanks was an incredible experience. True professionals. Right now, I have NOTHING lined up for the foreseeable future. It’s getting hard for an Ojibwe comic out here. I was supposed to have a performance booked for August 2nd in Minneapolis, but I’m playing a pretty intense game of phone tag since early this month. I hope this comes through soon, I’d love to catch my buddy Byron Graves’ book reading on Friday and an open mic or two. Leading up to Saturday’s show, I was leaning toward taking a break from performing because my last few shows left a bad taste in my mouth. Quite possibly giving it up altogether, but Saturday was such an unbelievable experience and the love for performing is back! The Ojibwe Outlaw is confident in his skills once again.
